'Run for the Warriors' art project gets students involved

9 Feb 2006 | #NAME? II Marine Expeditionary Force

The “Run for the Warriors” T-shirt design contest sets the pace for the United Service Organization’s 10K, 5K and 1-mile fun run sharing the name this spring.

The contest is open to children grades 4-12 and the first place artwork will be featured on race T-shirts, posters and other promotional material.

“The theme for the race this year is ‘Hope Beyond Recovery’ and it’s an expression of your feelings about the wounded heroes,” said Robin Kelleher, race director.

Children get to pick their own interpretation of that theme, according to Kelleher. Original art should be submitted on a flat, medium paper no larger than 8 x 10.

The winning design will be placed on the race day shirt, the future Web site for the race and other promotional products.

According to Kelleher, the race may be fun, but serves another purpose as well.

“We hope to take the race money and set up a scholarship fund for the families and spouses of wounded warriors,” Kelleher said. “The funds might also be able to help out spouses who have to take on the role of being the main provider.”

Deadline for art entries is Feb. 24.  Registration forms can be dropped off at Hidden Talents or the Paradise Point Child Care Center aboard Camp Lejeune. They can also be mailed to "Art Project" c/o Maryruth Bracken, 2716 Wavell Street, Camp Lejeune, N.C., 28547.
