ATLANTIC OCEAN – A bipartisan Senate Staff Delegation witnessed the critical importance of amphibious readiness and naval integration firsthand during the Amphibious Squadron 8 (PHIBRON 8) and 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit's (MEU) Integration (PMINT) exercise, held off the coast of Virginia and North Carolina from April 4-5, 2025. The delegation, comprised of Senate Military Legislative Assistants, Military, Defense and National Security Advisors, observed the complex coordination required to unite the air, ground and logistics elements of the 22nd MEU with the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group (IWO ARG). The IWO ARG consists of its flagship, the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) and the two San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ships USS San Antonio (LPD 17) and USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD 28).

U.S. Marines with the Maritime Special Purpose Force and Battalion Landing Team 1/6, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, execute a simulated raid and tactical recovery of aircraft personnel (TRAP) during MEU Exercise (MEUEX) III on Clarks Hill National Guard Training Site, South Carolina, March 9, 2023. A raid is a mission requiring a small force to swiftly penetrate hostile territory to secure information, confuse the enemy, or to destroy their installations, and ends with a planned withdrawal upon completion of the mission. EOTG organized MEUEX III as part of the 26th MEU’s third phase of the pre-deployment training to ensure their Marines and Sailors, in partnership with their Navy teammates, are ready to serve as a formidable deterrent capable of performing missions across a full range of military operations from the sea.
