MARINE COMPOUND, Naval Station Rota, Spain -- The Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team Company Europe (FASTEUR) received a Meritorious Unit Commendation during a ceremony that took place Aug. 22, 2014.
The award was presented for outstanding service during their 2012 deployment to Libya in response to the Benghazi attack. The Marines were able to re-establish security and allowed diplomatic operations to resume within 24 hours of their arrival to the United States Embassy in Tripoli. From Sept. 12 to Dec. 1, 2012, FASTEUR conducted a variety of essential tasks such as: manning security checkpoints and over-watch positions, conducting convoy security, and training the existing Marine detachment. FASTEUR maintained command and control throughout the operation, also including the planning and execution of four re-supply missions, and the training of their relieving force.
According to SECNAV Notice 1650, in order for a unit to be worthy of a Meritorious Unit Commendation, the unit must distinguish itself by either valorous or meritorious achievement which renders the unit outstanding compared to other units performing similar service. This award is comparable to a Bronze Star Medal for an individual.
The mission of FASTEUR is to provide additional short term security when threat conditions elevate beyond the capabilities of the permanent security. The Marines within FASTEUR are highly skilled in counter surveillance, physical security, urban combat techniques, close-quarter combat and martial arts.
