MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C.-- -- Master Gunnery Sgt. David A. Owen was awarded the Bronze Star Dec. 16 in recognition of his contribution to combat operations in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Owen was cited for his exceptional leadership and integration efforts while serving as the unit’s communication guru. His innovation and organizational skills enabled 1st Marine Division to control 18 collection teams, five analytic nodes, and four electronic attack platforms in the heat of a real-world contingency.
“I was just doing what was expected of me,” said Owen, who credits the Marines up and down his chain of command for the success in his most recent combat tour.
“It’s a humbling experience, given the magnitude of the award,” said Owen.
The Bronze Star Medal is an individual decoration and is the fourth highest award within the Department of Defense for bravery, heroism, or meritorious service.
