U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Nathan Schmidtke, was nominated warrior of the week aboard Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3), the week of May 15, 2022. Schmidtke is a topographic analyst with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, who is tasked with making mission essential maps. Schmidtke joined the Marine Corps to make a difference and feels he is able to do that through his work.

Staff Sgt. Robert Ferguson, Schmidtke’s staff non-commissioned officer in-charge, describes Schmidtke as an individual with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn.

“Not only does Cpl. Schmidtke have an incredible work ethic, but he also has a positive vibe that his fellow Marines gravitate towards. No matter what kind of day he is having, he always finds a way to crack a joke and bring morale up within the (shop).”

Schmidtke enjoys lifting at the gym in his free time, and when he’s not hitting the weights alone, he’s often helping someone else reach their goals.

“He often helps those around him with advice on proper nutrition and lifting techniques. He is not afraid to take a day to lift with someone new and critique them on their lifts in a positive way,” said Ferguson.

His positive attitude and hard work ethic positively impacts the Marines around him. Through his hard work, his team can better accomplish their mission. Schmidtke looks forward to learning and growing throughout this deployment, but is also excited to get back home to his wife Faith and daughter Sadie. (U.S. Marine Corps story by Cpl.
