U.S. Marines, Sailors and civilians from across 2nd Marine Logistics Group received recognition for their volunteer work at an awards ceremony at Marston Pavilion, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, April 24, 2019.

The awardees made a significant impact within their communities in 2018. A number of the recipients earned the President Volunteer Service Award.

“Depending on the amount of service hours completed, individuals can receive the Bronze, Silver and Gold awards,” said Jose Padilla, deployment readiness coordinator for Combat Logistics Regiment 27. “They are receiving a certificate, coin and letter from Brig. Gen. [Kevin] Stewart, [commanding general of 2nd MLG].”

Also, awardees may receive a personalized certificate, an official pin, medallion, and/or a congratulatory letter from the president depending on the award earned.

The individuals performed a wide range of volunteer service to include community cleanup efforts and deployment assistance for families.

“The time my unit put in felt great because we were able to see how it made our city better,” said Cpl. Christian Fernandez, heavy equipment operator with 8th Engineer Support Battalion. The unit received a Silver level award.

Created in 2002, the PVSA has continued under each administration, honoring the volunteers who are using their time and talents to solve some of the toughest challenges facing the nation.

“We didn’t volunteer to earn awards, we did it to make an impact and help make other’s lives easier,” said Fernandez.

April is volunteer appreciation month, but these volunteers give their time and energy all year round.

“It’s so amazing to see our units giving back,” said Padilla. “It’s what we do as Marines, Sailors and even civilians. It’s what we’re bred to do!”
