Marines with 2nd Marine Division participated in a 50 mile hike at Camp Lejeune, N.C., Feb. 1, 2017. The hike originated in 1908 with an executive order administered by President Theodore Roosevelt and has since then only been attempted and completed twice since its inception. The hike was a challenge open to officers and enlisted personnel and allowed the Marines to bond as a unit as they step together.

The Mameluke sword of 2nd Lt. Paul W. Smithson, a Marine with 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, who was killed in combat during a patrol Nov. 20, 1968, during the Vietnam War, was presented to the Smithson family at the Officer's Club aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C., March 1, 2015. The sword was found by Staff Sgt. Jason Mabe, a motor transport maintenance chief with 2nd Radio Battalion, lying against a fence while he was on duty in 2013. The sword was presented back to Smithson's family by Mabe and the command of 2nd Radio Battalion after Mabe successfully identified the original owner and located the family. Tucked inside the National Museum of the Marine Corps, just outside Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., there is a small, poignant display honoring the Marines and sailors who gave their lives during the Battle for Iwo Jima. Nearly 6,000 Marine and Navy insignia adorn metallic panels. From afar, the neatly arranged square panes seem mere dotted patterns on the wall. But when one comes in a bit closer, they become a bronzen sea, a forest-like testament to each individual sacrifice made at Iwo Jima. For more than 30 Marines with Combat Logistics Battalion 6, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, 2nd Marine Logistics Group based out of Camp Lejeune, N.C., the monument was only one of dozens of sites they visited in May as they explored their deep Marine Corps heritage and the long legacy of leadership they now represent.
