The Marine Corps Engineer School (MCES) is one of many schools leading the way in enhancing and improving how Marines are taught by adapting a more adult centered learning methodology. MCES has combined the training of both the Engineer Electrical Equipment System Technician and the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician through the implementation of the Basic Utility System Technician Course (BUST). The BUST course ensures units have Marines who can perform all levels of electrical maintenance and mechanical maintenance for all engineer equipment across the Marine Corps. In accordance with the Commandants Force Design and Training Modernization 2030 guidance, the BUST course has deviated from the outdated lecture method and have adapted a more self-paced learning method in combination with hands on experience that allow student Marines to work and learn at their own pace. This adaptation and implementation of new learning methodologies have proven to increase retention and test scores within the Utilities Instructional community. Overall, these new methods of learning provide commanders with a more than capable Marine that can accomplish the utilities mission in any environment.

U.S. Service members participate in the Advanced Rider Track Day training at Naha Port, Okinawa, Japan, on Feb. 11, 2023. An ARTD certificate is the highest level of training that Status of Forces Agreement personnel can be certified with while riding a motorcycle. The training was organized to further understand how to properly lean, accelerate, and stop the vehicle. The course also ensured that each attendee was comfortable with all advanced riding techniques to help promote road safety for both civilians and service members alike. In order to successfully align within the Infantry training continuum, and meet the objectives of Force Design 2030, the Marine Corps Schools of Infantry are making significant changes to instructional design and evaluation. The Training Continuum is built on Experience-based student development that utilizes active learning to bring knowledge and skills together collectively – in real-world environments – to achieve an overall end-state. Along with student-centered, active learning environments where the student is responsible for his/her learning and seeks out information. The Schools of Infantry have moved to embody this line of thinking, adjusting the way our instructors teach and mentor their students to ensure greater retention of the lessons learned.
