Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel P. Doherty Commanding Officer, 2nd Radio Battalion

LtCol Nathaniel P. Doherty enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in September 88 under the delayed entry program and left for boot camp in August 89. After graduation he attended Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defense (NBCD) School, and was subsequently assigned to the 3d NBCD Platoon, 3d Force Service Support Group, Okinawa Japan in March of 1990. During his tour on Okinawa, then PFC Doherty was meritoriously promoted to lance corporal, corporal, and sergeant.

In March 92, Sgt Doherty attended Marine Security Guard School after which he was assigned to the United States Embassies, Georgetown, Guyana and Ottawa, Canada. In March 95, following his completion of embassy duty, Sgt Doherty was assigned to 2d Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Intelligence Group (2d SRIG), Camp Lejeune, where he was promoted to the rank of staff sergeant.

In May 98 SSgt Doherty was selected for the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program and reported for school at the University of Idaho, Moscow, during which he was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. Upon graduation in May of 2001, GySgt Doherty received his commission as a second lieutenant. Following completion of The Basic School, 2ndLt Doherty was trained as an intelligence officer and assigned to 3d Intelligence Battalion, III Marine Expeditionary Force (III MEF), Okinawa, Japan.

During his six years on Okinawa, 2ndLt Doherty held a variety of billets to include platoon commander, company executive officer, counter terrorism liaison officer, HUMINT exploitation team commander (OIF), battalion S-3A, company commander, and III MEF Counterintelligence/HUMINT Officer (CIHO).

In May of 2008, Captain Doherty was assigned as the Marine Officer Instructor at Oregon State University. After MOI duty Maj Doherty completed a joint tour at US Central Command where he worked within the J-2 doing intel resource management and HUMINT operations management. Following his joint tour, Maj Doherty attended Air Force Command and Staff College where he received a master’s degree in strategic studies.

Following PME, Major Doherty was assigned as the S-2 officer for the 24th MEU. Following the MEU deployment he served as the II MEF deputy G-2. LtCol Doherty’s personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal (x4) Joint Service Achievement Medal, and the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
