2d Intelligence Battalion, Commanding Officer
Lieutenant Colonel Robert J. Epstein

LtCol Epstein is a native of McLean, Virginia. After graduating from the United States Naval Academy in May 2008, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. Following completion of The Basic School, he completed the Marine Air-Ground Task Force Counterintelligence/Human Intelligence Course in Dam Neck, Virginia, and in 2009, was assigned to the 1st Marine Division, G-2 in Camp Pendleton, California where he served as the Staff Counterintelligence Officer, and the Intelligence Analysis section officer in charge.

In March 2010 he deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM as the Intelligence Operations Center Watch Officer, and Intelligence Analysis Officer. During the deployment he also served in Garmsir District, Helmand Province, Afghanistan supporting of Echo Company, 2d Battalion, 1st Marines. In March 2011, he reported to 2d Battalion, 4th Marines, and in August 2011 deployed to Musa Qaleh and Now Zad Districts, Helmand Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM as the Assistant Intelligence Officer.

Returning in March 2012, he executed orders to the United States Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. While there, LtCol Epstein completed the Expeditionary Warfare School’s Distance Education Program (DEP) as well as the United States Naval War College Command and Staff DEP.

In September 2014 LtCol Epstein was assigned to Headquarters, Marine Corps Recruiting Command (MCRC) where he served as the Officer in Charge of the Marine Corps Recruiting Information Support System (MCRISS).  LtCol Epstein served as the command’s functional advocate to Marine Corps Systems Command for the MCRISS Program of Record and spearheaded a modernization initiative for the program.

From September to November 2017 LtCol Epstein completed the Marine Air-Ground Task Force Intelligence Officer’s Course in Dam Neck, Virginia. In December 2017, he served as Regimental Intelligence Officer, 6th Marines.

LtCol Epstein reported to Task Force Southwest 19.1 in April 2018 and served as the Intelligence Advisor to the G-2, 215th Corps, Afghan National Army while deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation FREEDOM’S SENTINEL and the NATO RESOLUTE SUPPORT Mission from October 2018 to June 2019.

Returning to CONUS, LtCol Epstein served as the Intelligence Officer, II MEF Information Group. As the Intelligence Officer, he integrated the S-2 section into the Information Command Center, supported Fleet Battle Problems for US Second Fleet, and provided planning and exercise support to II MEF forces. From May 2020 to June 2021, LtCol Epstein served as the Aide-de-Camp to the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, proving direct support to the Marine Corps’ senior leaders. After graduating from the Marine Corps Command and Staff College in June 2022, LtCol Epstein was the Deputy Director of Intelligence Division’s Executive Support Section, providing intelligence to the Commandant, Headquarters Marine Corps, and the Department of the Navy secretariat. Promoting to LtCol in April 2023, he served as the Operations Officer for Information Intelligence Division from May 2023 to May 2025.

From May to December 2025, LtCol Epstein served as the Command Information Office for Marine Corps Intelligence and as the Branch Head for Intelligence Division’s Enterprise Management Office (M26).

LtCol Epstein assumed command of 2d Intelligence Battalion in January 2026.

LtCol Epstein holds a Bachelor’s of Science in History from the United States Naval Academy.  He also holds a Master’s of Science in Information Technology Management from the United States Naval Postgraduate School, and a Masters of Military Studies from the Marine Corps’ Command and Staff College.

His personal awards include the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal (gold star in lieu of third award), the Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal (gold star in lieu of third award), the Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal; the Combat Action Ribbon; and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
