Sergeant Major Miquel Bustos

Sergeant Major Miguel Bustos was born December 21, 1984 in Huntington Park, CA. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on June 2, 2003 and attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego California. Upon Completion, Private First Class (PFC) Bustos reported to the School of Infantry West (SOI-W) and received the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) of 0311 Infantry Rifleman. Upon Completion of SOI-W PFC Bustos reported to Marine Corps Security Force Training Company and received the MOS of 8152 Basic Security guard.

In January 2004 PFC Bustos reported to Marine Corps Security Forces Bangor, WA where he served in a variety of Billets to include Corporal of the Guard.

In December 2005 Corporal Bustos reported to 1st Battalion 5th Marines where he deployed with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) as a Team Leader in July of 2006. Then in November of 2007 Sergeant Bustos deployed as a Squad Leader on the 11th MEU.

In July 2008 Sergeant Bustos reported to SOI-W, where he served as a Combat Instructor with Alpha Company, Infantry Training Battalion (ITB). Sergeant Bustos served in the billets of Rifle Squad Leader, Rifle Platoon Sergeant, and Platoon Commander. In January of 2010 he was transferred to the Headquarters and Instructor Group and served in the Weapons and Guns section until July of 2011.

In August 2011 Sergeant Bustos reported to 2nd Battalion 5th Marines, where he deployed to Musa Qala Afghanistan as a Squad Leader in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and then in December of 2013, he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant and deployed two additional times on the 31st MEU.

In July of 2016 Staff Sergeant Bustos reported to SOI-W and served as a Platoon Commander with Bravo Company ITB. In October of 2017 Staff Sergeant Bustos was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant and was transferred to Combat Instructor School and served in the billets of Instructor Trainer, Academics Coordinator and Chief Instructor.

In July of 2019 Gunnery Sergeant Bustos reported to Marine Corps Training Mission United Arab Emirates where he served as a Foreign Security Force Advisor for the Presidential Guard Institute Recruit Wing in Al Ain.

In August of 2020 Gunnery Sergeant Bustos reported to Field Medical Training Battalion West, where he served as the Senior Military Advisor.

In January of 2022 Gunnery Sergeant Bustos was promoted to First Sergeant and reported to Marine Air Support Squadron 3 where he served as the Air Control Company First Sergeant.

In December of 2023 First Sergeant Bustos reported to SOI-W ITB where he served as the Company First Sergeant for Delta Company, H&I Company, and Mike Company. 

In July of 2025 First Sergeant Bustos reported to 8th Communication Battalion where he served as the Charlie Company First Sergeant until his promotion to Sergeant Major in December of 2025.

Sergeant Major Bustos' personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with four Gold Stars in Lieu of 5th award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device with 4 Gold Stars in Lieu of 5th award and Combat Action Ribbon.
