Commanding Officer, II MEF Support Battalion
Lieutenant Colonel Spencer D. Sweet

Born in Long Beach, California, and raised in Watertown, Wisconsin, Lieutenant Colonel Sweet graduated from Augustana College (Rock Island, IL) with a Business Administration degree. He attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 2008. He graduated from The Basic School in 2009, with assignment as a Logistics Officer.


Upon graduation from Logistics Officers Course, Lieutenant Colonel Sweet reported to 9th Communication Battalion at Camp Pendleton, California as the Battalion Logistics Officer. Lieutenant Colonel Sweet deployed with 9th Communication Battalion in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM to Helmand Province, Afghanistan from August 2010 to March 2011. Upon return from deployment, he was assigned as Motor Transportation Platoon Commander, 9th Communication Battalion.


In October 2011, Lieutenant Colonel Sweet and his Motor Transportation Platoon received orders to report to Echo Company, Third Assault Amphibian Battalion in preparation for a follow-on attachment to Combat Logistics Battalion 5 as a Motor Transportation Company. After a five month pre-deployment cycle, he deployed back to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, as a Motor Transportation Platoon Commander from March 2012 to September 2012 supporting Regimental Combat Team 5.


Upon return from deployment in September 2012, Lieutenant Colonel Sweet received orders to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines in Twentynine Palms, California. As the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines Logistics Officer, he supported a 12-month pre-deployment cycle and again deployed in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM to Helmand Province, Afghanistan from September 2013 to March 2014.

 

After returning from Afghanistan in March 2014, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines was put into the deployment rotation supporting the Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force - Crisis Response - Central Command (SPMAGTF-CR-CC), beginning a new training cycle in preparation for deployment. In January 2015, Lieutenant Colonel Sweet deployed with SPMAGTF-CR-CC, supporting Marines in Kuwait, Iraq and Jordan. During this time, he served as both the Battalion Logistics Officer, and the Assistant Logistics Officer for 7th Marine Regiment.

 

Returning from the SPMAGTF-CR-CC deployment in June 2015, Lieutenant Colonel Sweet had orders to report to Naval Post-Graduate School (NPS) in Monterey, California. From June 2015 to January 2017 he was a student at NPS, completing a Masters program with a follow-on payback tour at Marine Corps Logistics Command (MARCORLOGCOM) in Albany, Georgia.


From January 2017 through July 2020, Lieutenant Colonel Sweet served at MARCORLOGCOM. He was assigned to the G3/5, leading a team of NPS graduates within the G3/5 Fusion Cell, who provided the command with an analytics capability to help inform executive level decision making.

 

In July 2020, Lieutenant Colonel Sweet reported to 2d Marine Logistics Group, Combat Logistics Regiment 27 at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. From July 2020 to August 2022, he served as the Regimental Operations Officer. Highlights from this tour include: Supporting a Presidential Order deploying a battalion to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to open a COVID-19 vaccination site; In August 2021 he deployed to Quantico, Virginia in support of OPERATION ALLIES WELCOME aiding in the reception of over 5,000 Afghan refugees; And in January 2022, he led the planning to deploy over 300 Marines from the regiment to Norway as part of COLD RESPONSE 22. In September 2022, he was nominated to deploy, filling a joint billet under United States Special Operations Command.

 

From October 2022 through May 2023, Lieutenant Colonel Sweet deployed to Al Udeid Air Force Base in Qatar in support of OPERATION ENDURING SENTINEL. He was assigned as the J33 Current Operations Officer for Special Operations Joint Task Force - Central (SOJTF-C), a 1-Star Command. Upon return from deployment, Lieutenant Colonel Sweet was in receipt of orders to Marine Forces Special Operations Command, where he served from June 2023 to June 2024.

 

In June 2024 Lieutenant Colonel Sweet assumed command of II Marine Expeditionary Force Support Battalion at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

 

Lieutenant Colonel Sweet's professional military education includes Expeditionary Warfare School (blended seminar), Command and Staff (Non-resident), Naval Post-Graduate School, and the Intermediate MAGTF Logistics Operations Course. Personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with one gold star, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal with one gold star.
