Commanding Officer, 8th Communication Battalion
Lieutenant Colonel Joshua N. Nunn

Lieutenant Colonel Joshua N. Nunn was born in Williamsburg, Virginia and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Virginia in May 2003. He commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps on 28 June, 2003.  In 2004, he completed The Basic School, and Communications and Information Systems Officers Course in Quantico, Virginia. 

     In December, 2004 Second Lieutenant Nunn reported to Company A, 8th Communication Battalion, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where he served as a platoon commander for the Data Platoon and Wire, Construction, Switching, and Technical Control Platoon and deployed to Iraq with II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM 04-06. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 1 May 2005.

Upon returning from his deployment in June 2006, First Lieutenant Nunn assumed responsibilities as the 22d Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) Joint Task Force Enabler Officer-in-Charge. He was promoted to Captain on 1 August 2007.  From July 2007 to February 2008, Captain Nunn deployed with the 22d MEU to the USCENTCOM area of operations in support of theater stability, counter-piracy, and humanitarian assistance operations.

In March, 2008, Captain Nunn reported to Company B, Marine Cryptologic Support Battalion at Fort Meade, Maryland and the National Security Agency-Information Assurance Directorate where he served as a Client Advocate for the Marine Corps and Special Operations Command.  While at NSA, Captain Nunn managed a $20 Million portfolio of enterprise and special communications projects in support of his clients’ most critical requirements.  In January, 2009, Captain Nunn was selected as the 2008 NSA-IAD Military Performer of the Year. 

From May 2011 to March 2012, Captain Nunn reported to a joint duty assignment where he completed a Special Operations Assessment and Selection Course and multiple Joint Special Operations Training Courses. Upon completion of his training in March 2012, Captain Nunn served in a series of highly sensitive and specialized leadership billets including Special Communications Officer-in-Charge, Forward Communications Company Commander, Signals Intelligence Mission Commander, and Joint Special Operations Support Battalion Executive Officer.   He was promoted to Major in January, 2014. 

Upon completion of his joint tour in August 2015, Major Nunn attended the Marine Corps Command and Staff College where he received the Lieutenant General Edward W. Snedeker Information Technology writing award upon his graduation in 2016.

From July 2016 to July 2018, Major Nunn served as the S-6 Officer in 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, California.  In this assignment he deployed as the S-6 Communications Officer with Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force – Crisis Response – Central Command from December 2016 to August 2017.  Under his leadership, the 7th Marine Regiment S-6 section received the 2017 Lieutenant Colonel Kevin M. Shea outstanding communications unit of the year award at the annual Headquarters Marine Corps C4 Awards dinner.

In July, 2018, Major Nunn reported for joint duty at White House Communications Agency, in Washington, D.C. as a Presidential Communications Officer and Deputy J-3 Operations Officer. Upon his promotion to Lieutenant Colonel in November, 2019, he assumed responsibilities as the National Military Command Center Operations Division Chief in Defense Information Systems Agency’s Joint Staff Support Center at the Pentagon.
