From December 2002 to April 2004, he was assigned to 2nd Marine Division, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, India Company where he served as a rifleman and team leader. He deployed with the 3rd Bn 2nd Marines Task Force Tarawa to Iraq in 2003, and to Camp Lemonier Djibouti in 2004.
From April 2004 to November 2006 Cpl Smith was assigned to 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, Charlie Company. During this time, he served as a Reconnaissance Man and as a radio team operator. He deployed with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), Amphibious Reconnaissance Platoon in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
From December 2006 to December 2007 Sgt Smith was assigned to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, Charlie Company and served as a team leader. He deployed with 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, Charlie Company to Al Anbar province Iraq from March 2007 to September 2007. He received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with a combat distinguishing Device “V” for actions as team leader, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for receiving the “Holberton Award” for being named 2007 team leader of the year.
From March 2008 to March 2011 Sgt Smith was assigned to Weapons Training Battalion, Scout Sniper School, Quantico VA where he served as the primary field skills instructor. He deployed with Marine Corps Training and Advisory Group as a Scout Sniper instructor in support of the Georgian deployment program.
From March 2011 to February 2014 SSgt Smith was assigned to II Marine Expeditionary Force, 2nd Force Reconnaissance Company where he served as a team leader. He deployed with 26th MEU, Maritime Raid Force as a team leader.
From March 2014 to March 2015 GySgt Smith was assigned to III Marine Expeditionary Force, III Expeditionary Operations Training Group, Special Missions Branch where he served as the lead Reconnaissance and Surveillance and lead Urban Sniper course instructor. From April 2015 to December 2016, he was assigned as the Special Missions Branch SNCOIC.
From January to July 2017, GySgt Smith was assigned to Henderson Hall HQMC to attend Dutch language school at Defense language Institute- Washington in preparation for duty as an exchange SNCO with the Netherlands Marine Special Operations Forces.
From August 2017 to August 2020, GySgt Smith was assigned to the S-7 training section within the Netherlands Marine Special Operations Squadron. While on the exchange program he led all Marine Dutch training on sniper tactics & marksmanship techniques and supervised live fire CQB training for both C & M squadrons.
From August 2020 to September 2023 MSgt Smith served as a Company Operations Chief in Bravo and Force Company 2nd Recon Bn. While a Company Operations Chief Master Smith deployed twice to EUCOM under 61/2 in support of service level priorities. In February of 2024 he was promoted to Master Gunnery Sergeant and served as the Bn Operations Chief until March 2026.
In March 2026 MGySgt Smith assumed the duties as the II Marine Expeditionary Force, II Expeditionary Operations Training Group SNCOIC.
