Nearly 250 Marines with 2nd Radio Battalion gathered to participate in the fifth annual Run to Remember at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Aug. 5, 2017.

The memorial run, which is held every first Saturday of August, is named in honor of Sgt. Lucas Pyeatt, a cryptologic linguist who was killed in action during Operation Enduring Freedom, February 2011. The run honors the memory of Sgt. Pyeatt and other service members who have been killed in action.

“Marines from all over the world with 2nd Radio Battalion come together in honor of this hero,” said Lieutenant Colonel Brad Bean, the commanding officer of 2nd Radio Battalion. “Every one of our detachments is running today in honor of Sgt. Pyeatt; whether they’re on ship, in Syria, Afghanistan, or Iraq.”

To his fellow Marines, Sgt. Pyeatt was known as a hard-working noncommissioned officer who led his Marines from the front. To his family and friends, he was known for his strong will and desire to serve his country.

“I think he’s had a positive impact helping Marines understand not only the gravity of the things they do, but also how dangerous things can be as well,” said Scott Pyeatt, Sgt. Lucas Pyeatt’s father. “The way he lived his life should show Marines how to make a commitment to something greater than yourself.”

Sgt. Pyeatt was posthumously promoted to sergeant and was awarded the Purple Heart and the National Intelligence Medal for Valor.
