Sergeant Major Travis began his current assignment as the II Marine Expeditionary Force Sergeant Major on 10 January 2020. A native of Pinnacle, North Carolina, Sergeant Major Travis enlisted in the Marine Corps in August 1991 and was assigned as a Tank Crewman. He has attended all required Marine Corps Resident Professional Military Education (PME) Courses, Army Airborne School, Expeditionary Warfare School, Senior Enlisted Joint PME I & II, Asia Pacific Orientation Course, and Keystone.
His service in the Fleet Marine Force includes: Tank Crewman, Gunner, and Tank Commander with 1st and 3rd Tank Battalions (April 1992-January 1995), Imagery Analyst, 1st Force Imagery Interpretation Unit, 3rd Intelligence Battalion (March 1996-April 1997), Platoon Sergeant, Training SNCO and Company Gunnery Sergeant, Marine Corps Imagery Support Unit, 1st Intelligence Battalion (April 1997 – March 2002) and (January 2005- January 2006), Company First Sergeant with 1st Radio Battalion, I MEF Headquarters Group (January 2006 - December 2007), Company First Sergeant with 2d Battalion, 5th Marines, 5th Marine Regiment (December 2007-June 2010); Sergeant Major, 2d Battalion 5th Marines, 5th Marine Regiment (March 2013 – February 2015), Sergeant Major Combat Logistics Regiment 1 (February 2015- April 2017); and Sergeant Major, 1st Marine Logistics Group (April 2017- November 2019).
His service outside the Fleet Marine Force includes: Detachment Commander, United States Embassies Ankara, Turkey and Bridgetown, Barbados, (March 2002 – January 2005) and Sergeant Major, Recruiting Station Baton Rouge, Louisiana (June 2010- March 2013).
Sergeant Major Travis’ personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with 4 Gold Stars, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Gold Star, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with three Gold Stars, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
