Colonel Russell commissioned in December 1995 from North Carolina State University and was designated a Field Artillery Officer upon completion of training in 1997.
His combat deployments include: Military Transition Team Leader, Habbaniyah, Iraq (2007); Executive Officer, Brigade Headquarters Group, MEB-A, Helmand Province, Afghanistan (2009-10); Plans Director (J5), CJSOTF-A, Bagram, Afghanistan (2012)
Colonel Russell’s previous service with the Fleet Marine Force includes: Fire Direction Officer and Executive Officer, Battery C, 1st Battalion, 10th Marines (1997-99); Fire Support Coordinator, Operations Directorate, 2d Force Service Support Group (1999-2001); Commanding Officer, Battery C, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines (2002-04); Executive Officer, 5th Battalion, 10th Marines (2009-10); Commanding Officer, 1st Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company (ANGLICO) (2013-15).
His headquarters and staff assignments include: Officer Assignments, Manpower and Reserve Affairs, HQMC (2004-06); Operations Directorate, MARSOC (2010-12); Operations Directorate, United States Cyber Command (2016-18); U.S. Plans Directorate, Marine Corps Forces Cyberspace Command (2018-20)
His education includes the following: The Amphibious Warfare School, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and College of Information and Cyberspace. Master’s degrees in both Government Information Leadership (Cyberspace Strategy) and Theological Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
Colonel Russell has been a member of the Marine Corps Gazette Editorial Advisory Panel since 2005, is a frequent contributor, and was awarded first place in the 2013 General Hogaboom Leadership writing award for his article Organizational Level Leadership and honorable mention in the 2016 Major General Chase Boldness and Daring writing award for his article The Real Cyber Paradigm.
