THE HISTORY OF II MARINE EXPEDITIONARY FORCE: 1966-2012







Temporarily activated as II Marine Amphibious Force at various times in the 1960s and 1970s to participate in exercises and operations.


Activated July 20, 1984 at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, as a permanent headquarters.





Re-designated Feb. 5, 1988 as II Marine Expeditionary Force.





Elements participated in multiple operations on the Balkan peninsula, March 1993 - February 1998 and January - July 1999.





Elements participated in Operation Northern Watch, Southern Watch, Desert Thunder and Desert Fox, Iraq, July - October 1993, September 1994 - 1995, November - December 1995, June - December 1997, January 1998 - December 2000, and August - November 2001.





Elements participated in multiple operations in Haiti, January 1994 - January 1998 and February - May 2004.





Elements participated in Operation Avid Response, Turkey, August - September 1999.





Elements participated in Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan, November 2001 - August 2002, and October - December 2002.




Elements participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Iraq, March - July 2003 and August 2004 - February 2005.







Participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Iraq, March 2005 - March 2006, March 2007 - March 2008 and March 2009 - March 2010.







Participated in Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan May 2009 - April 2010 (2nd MEB), March 2011 - March 2012 (II MEF FWD) and March 2013 - March 2014 (II MEF FWD).
